1. How long before I can start volunteering in a program?
From the time you inquire about a volunteer opportunity, it will take approximately three weeks before you are volunteering. That's because new volunteers are screened via background and reference checks and also attend a “Meet & Greet” to get orientated to Closer to Home Community Services (CTH).
2. How much time do I have to give?
We offer a range of volunteer opportunities and commitment levels in order to accommodate our volunteers. We provide three types of involvement including: occasional (special events, fundraisers, casinos), seasonal (in three-month blocks: summer, fall, spring, winter) and regular (ongoing weekly, monthly).
3. What if I have plans to go away for vacation, work, etc?
We accommodate and support our volunteers in their efforts to re-energize, relax, stay healthy and spend time with friends and family. Once you’ve completed your volunteer contract, your file will stay active with us for one year – this means you won’t have to start all over again if you choose to return as a volunteer.
4. What kinds of volunteer opportunities are available?
There are many different volunteer opportunities at CTH, depending on our current needs, your interests and availability. We are always looking for program support, program leaders and the occasional helping hand. To find out about our current needs, click on our “current volunteer opportunities” link in the volunteer section of our agency website to find an updated list of volunteer postings. These postings will provide you with detailed information on the program, type of position, qualifications needed, type of involvement and more.
5. What types of documentation do I need to volunteer?
This will depend on the type of volunteer position you are interested in. For example, positions for special events or fundraisers can require less documentation than a program leader. Our staff will let you know what documentation you will need when they contact you to set up your “Meet & Greet.” Positions requiring cleared Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks need two pieces of accepted identification (see next question for details). We will help you apply for these checks and we cover all costs so they are FREE for our volunteers.
6. What counts as two pieces of accepted identification?
*Please note, one of the two pieces of accepted identification must be photo ID*

- Birth Certificate
- Alberta Health Care Card

- Immigration ID Card
- Citizenship Card

- Permanent Residence Card
